Importing data with CSV
When you have a lot of contacts or organizations to add, importing from a CSV file is much faster than creating them one by one.
Starting an import
- Click Contacts in the sidebar, then click the Import button
- Alternatively, go directly to the imports page from the sidebar
The import wizard
The import follows a step-by-step process:
Step 1: Choose what you're importing
Select whether you're importing Contacts or Organizations. Each option shows a Download example CSV link so you can see the expected format.
Step 2: Upload your CSV
Drag and drop your CSV file into the upload area, or click to browse. The file must be:
- In CSV format. If you have an Excel file, save or export it as CSV first.
- Under 10MB in size
Step 3: Map columns
Once your file is uploaded, you'll see a column mapping screen. This is where you match the columns in your CSV to the fields in OnboardingHub.
For contacts, the available fields are:
- Name (required)
- Organization
- External ID
For organizations, the available fields are:
- Name (required)
Map each column from your CSV to the corresponding field. Any columns you don't map will be ignored.
Step 4: Preview
Before importing, you'll see a preview of your data with the mapping applied. Review it to make sure everything looks correct.
Step 5: Import
Click Import to start the process. Large imports run in the background — you'll be notified when it's complete.
Import history
The imports page shows a list of all past imports with their status:
- Completed — all rows were imported successfully
- Processing — the import is still running
- Failed — something went wrong (check the error details)
Tips for successful imports
- Make sure your CSV has a header row with column names
- Names are required for both contacts and organizations
- Email addresses should be unique per contact within your workspace
- If you're importing contacts with organizations, make sure the organization names match exactly (or import organizations first)
- Use the example CSV templates as a starting point for your file format
